“Hesitant femininity” refers to a demeanor or expression of femininity that is marked by uncertainty, reservation, or reluctance
Why are women reluctant? Reluctant to fully embrace feminine traits, why is it due to external pressure, societal expectation, or personal insecurities?
These artworks by the artist vividly portray the profound emotions of loneliness, despair, loss, and insecurity experienced by women across South Asia. Through their poignant brushstrokes, the artist captures the pervasive sense of melancholy and hopelessness that permeates the lives of these women. From childhood to adolescence and into young adulthood, they are ensnared by the rigid social and cultural boundaries that confine and constrain them.
From a tender age, these women are confronted with the harsh realities of their existence within a society that imposes limitations on their dreams and aspirations. As they navigate through their formative years, the weight of societal expectations grows heavier, casting a shadow over their innocence and joy. The innocence of childhood is marred by the awareness of their predetermined roles and the constraints placed upon their ambitions.
Brushstrokes of Resilience: Illuminating the Depths of Women's Struggles and Triumphs
Women grapple with the complexities of identity and belonging in a world that often marginalizes their voices and diminishes their worth. The transition into young adulthood only serves to exacerbate their sense of disillusionment as they confront the stark realities of their circumstances. Bound by tradition and societal norms, they find themselves trapped in a cycle of despair and resignation, yearning for a sense of agency and autonomy.
Through my art, I bear witness to the silent screams and shattered spirits of those touched by the darkness of sexual harassment. Each stroke is a battle cry, demanding justice for the violated and a reckoning for the perpetrators. Let my canvas be a mirror reflecting the pain, resilience, and unyielding strength of survivors, as we paint a world where harassment has no place and every voice is heard.
Ragini Upadhyay Grela ‘s work have received international recognition, travelling halfway around the world to hang in numerous mueseums and private collections. Women’s struggle for equal rights has also been a focus of her pictures for many years. While her works are diverse in their expression, they clearly reference and mark the times they reflect.
Since 1994, galley “Atelier I.S.” in Walhorn, Belgium has regularly presented the works of Ragini Upadhyay Grela. Thus, over more than a quarter of a century, a deep friendship and connection to this extraordinary, remarkable, and strong woman has developed.

Navigating Hesitant Femininity: Women's Roles in the 20th Century
In the dynamic landscape of the 20th century, women grappled with evolving gender roles amidst profound social, political, and cultural shifts. Despite significant strides towards equality, entrenched barriers persisted, relegating women to subordinate roles within the domestic sphere. Hesitant femininity emerged as a poignant reflection of women’s ambivalence towards traditional gender norms, with societal pressures often stifling their aspirations and autonomy.
However, amidst societal conformity, women began asserting their voices, catalyzed by the tumultuous events of the era. The emergence of second-wave feminism saw women demand equal rights and opportunities, challenging discriminatory practices and redefining the boundaries of femininity. Through activism and advocacy, women shattered the confines of hesitant femininity, paving the way for greater autonomy and self-expression, yet reminders of the enduring struggle for women’s rights lingered as the century drew to a close.
